A Brief Professional Biography of the Artist
Born in 1939 in Manchester, England, Maureen Booth started to paint in oils and watercolors when she was 19 years old. At this time she did a few portraits under the direction of the painter, Peter Shaw. In 1964 she came to live on the coast of Southern Spain, where she had her first studio and started selling her work. In 1969 she moved inland to a village near Granada where, with her husband, she renovated a stone farmhouse which included a bigger painting studio and, eventually, a printmaking workshop.
Residency at Rodríguez-Acosta Foundation
Granada is a town with many cultural possibilities. In 1977 she was selected to work in the etching workshop of the Fundación Rodriguez-Acosta, and worked there for two and a half years under the direction of the maestro José Lómas. In 1984 she was granted Spanish citizenship. Maureen has participated in Madrid’s International Graphics Fair, ESTAMPA, since its first edition, ten years ago. She works with several galleries, both in Granada and further afield.
In 1984 she created the pilot project for a province-wide series of painting workshops for young people, and ran one of these workshops for three years in her own village. In 1997 she was invited to The Nacional Museum, Belgrade to the Open Workshop to show etching techniques, where she was also invited to participate in the Biennal of Contempory Graphics in Belgrade 1998. Maureen was invited to represent Spain at the Third International Symposium for Art in Koschuta, Austria in the summer of 2001, where she was made a member of the Austrian Art Association and won a special jury award.
Recent Activities
For the past few years Maureen has devoted the month of July each summer to running etching workshops in her studio. Maureen is married with three children and six grandchildren. She spent the year 2005 experimenting with artists’ books, creating a series based on the poems of the Syrian poet, Nizar Kabani. In 2006 Maureen created another artist’s book entitled in Spanish Entredós (“Between the Two”) with 11 etchings illustrating 10 poems by contemporary Spanish poets. She presented the book in Granada’s Casa de los Tiros municipal museum in November, 2005. Maureen’s most recent exhibit was at the Delagua Gallery in Úbeda (Jaén) in December 2008. In January of 2009 she initiated her Studio Visits project.

Hello – I’m delighted I stumbled upon you and your beautiful work/studio. I found you when searching for printing making in Spain. I am exploring the possibility of spending time in S. Spain (currently, Sevilla is in my sights) to study the arts. Any suggestions, ideas, inspirations are greatly appreciated.
I so enjoyed the interview/video. Your spirit shined through.
Peace ~Michelle
Thank you for your lovely compliments, Michelle.
The first idea which occurs to me is what a good idea it is to come to Spain. Prepare to fall in love with the country and the people.
In order for me to make any useful suggestions I need to know more about your plans. For example:
When would you be coming?
How long would you be staying?
Do you need a degree course, or will you be designing your own study plan?
What media are you interested in working in?
What art training have you had already?
And like that.
If you could fill me in a bit, I’ll get back to you.
Kind regards,
Maureen
